„Łódź to miasto z duszą” – to zdanie wypowiedziane przez Gustawa Herlinga- Grudzińskiego aż prosi się o dopełnienie …z jazzową duszą!

Jazz zadomowił się w Łodzi za sprawą pierwszej założonej w powojennej Polsce Wyższej Szkoły Filmowej, w której studiowali słynni później reżyserzy – m. in. Polański, Wajda, Munk, Kieślowski. Wśród studentów „Filmówki” na wydziale operatorskim byli jazzmani Jerzy „Duduś” Matuszkiewicz i Witold Sobociński – współzałożyciele jednego z najpopularniejszych w latach 50-tych zespołów jazzowych ”Melomani”. Szkoła filmowa była rodzajem „laboratorium sztuki nowoczesnej”, w której wokół działalności związanej bezpośrednio z filmem i teatrem rozwijały się także muzyka, literatura i malarstwo. To „Filmówka” tworzyła przestrzeń wolności dla jazzu, który w komunistycznej Polsce był kojarzony z amerykańskim imperializmem.

To w Łodzi tworzył muzykę do filmów Romana Polańskiego genialny Krzysztof Komeda. Jazz lat 50-tych i 60-tych był muzyką ilustrującą dzieła filmowe Munka, Wajdy i innych znamienitych twórców tzw. Polskiej Szkoły Filmowej. Ówczesne filmy z jazzowymi soundtrackami ukazują ducha tej nieodległej epoki, dając świadectwo wyrafinowanym gustom dominującym wtedy wśród zbuntowanych elit artystycznych w komunistycznej Polsce.
